‘Twister’ is a modern classic that was released almost a full three decades ago - well, 28 years ago to be exact (yes, 1996 is 28 years ago!) - that everyone has seen and enjoyed. I have seen the 1996 movie several times over the years and still find it very entertaining.
Now, it’s time for more tornado action with the stand-alone sequel ‘Twisters.’
Kate Cooper is a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in NYC. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi, to test a ground-breaking new tracking system.
There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens, the charming and reckless social media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better.
As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.
Just like the 1996 movie, ‘Twisters’ delivers a lot of intense tornado sequences that are visually awesome to look at. And, this isn’t a direct sequel to the first movie, despite a few small references here and there. So, you don’t necessarily have to watch the first movie to understand this one!
The storm/tornado sequences can get really intense and exhilarating. Each major storm sequence seems to top one another and they do a great job keeping your eyes glued to the screen.
There are a couple sequences that really stand out in this movie. There’s an entire sequence that occurs during a rodeo (that’s also featured a bit in the trailers) that is both exhilarating and just a little bit emotional. The entire third act where a storm wreaks havoc on a small town is also really intense and features a tornado rip through an oil refinery that bursts into flames, which makes the sequence even more chaotic.
This stand-alone sequel also has a few emotional moments, such as when the lead character, Kate Cooper, ends up going through a traumatic moment while chasing a tornado during college. All of the storm sequences in the movie are also fun to watch, especially when Tyler Owens, a.k.a. the “Tornado Wrangler,” drives into a tornado.
Let me know on my Wyoming County Press Examiner reviews page on Facebook your thoughts on this stand-alone sequel and which movie did you like better - the 1996 movie or this one?

A follow up to the 1996 movie has been either rumored or in some stage of development for many years - including a potential direct sequel at one point.
During its opening weekend, it was initially projected to gross $40-55 million. But, it ended up over-performing majorly, earning $81.1 million during its opening weekend.
‘Twisters’ is rated PG-13 for intense action and peril, some language and injury images and has a running time of 122 minutes.
Coming up next: the highly anticipated ‘Deadpool and Wolverine,’ ‘Harold and the Purple Crayon’ and ‘It Ends With Us.’
