In 2019, Marvel Studios brought the famous female superhero Captain Marvel to the big screen in her own feature origin story, simply titled Captain Marvel. Since then, the MCU heroine has only appeared in The Avengers: Endgame and mid-credit appearances in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the Disney Plus series Ms. Marvel.
Now, this sequel marks the cinematic return of Captain Marvel, along with the cinematic debuts of Ms Marvel (a.k.a. Kamala Khan) and Monica Rambeau (both making the jump from Disney Plus) and is a fun, entertaining entry of the series, even though it can have a silly moment here and there.
Carol Danvers a.k.a. Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol smoldering the burden of a destabilized universe.

When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel), and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau.
Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work together to save the universe as “The Marvels.”
‘The Marvels’ is the latest entry of the MCU that delivers some rather entertaining action moments and a couple parts that can be humorous (and a little silly at times).
The team-up of the three main characters did end up delivering some really entertaining moments. Some of the action sequences that feature them are really fun to watch, especially when they first notice that their powers are entangled and they keep swapping spots during their fight scenes.
Kamala Khan offers some comedic bits as the one of the younger superheroes, Ms. Marvel, and does a great job with a few of her emotional moments. Khan is also a die-hard fan of Captain Marvel, which is a small plot point that crosses over from her Disney Plus series. Her family that appears in the series is also in the movie and they also provide some fun comedic relief as well.
There are quite a few moments in this MCU venture that are visually incredible. The scenes where we see the time warps and wormholes are some of the best moments in the movie. Samuel L. Jackson, who’s back as Nick Fury, also has some comedic bits that will have you chuckle.
This ‘Captain Marvel’ sequel has a lighter tone compared to the 2019 movie, which does work for the most part. There are a few moments in this sequel that they could’ve added to and focused on. Some of the characters in this movie are from Disney Plus shows so you might have to get a little familiar with some of the shows (mainly Wanda Vision, Ms. Marvel and Secret Invasion).
Overall, ‘The Marvels’ sequel is a fun time on the big screen. There are a few moments that can be on the kind of silly side, such as a planet where people communicate only through song and dance. The action is great and the visual effects are amazing, compared to some recent MCU releases. The end of this sequel and the mid-credit scene lead up to some exciting things that could be really awesome. And, the mid-credit scene has a character that I wasn’t expecting to see!
The cast: Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel; Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau; Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel; Zawe Ashton as Dar-Benn; Gary Lewis as Emperor Dro’ge; Park Seo-joon as Prince Yan; Zenobia Schroff as Muneeba Khan; Mohari Kapur as Yusuf Khan; Seagar Shaikh as Aamir Khan and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.
‘The Marvels’ is written by Nia DaCosta (Candyman), Megan McDonnell (Wanda Vision) and Elissa Karasik (Loki) and directed by DaCosta.
Plans for a ‘Captain Marvel’ sequel was confirmed not long after the 2019 movie was released. ‘The Marvels’ marks the 33rd entry of the ever-growing MCU, which will be taking a small theatrical break in 2024 with only one MCU feature being released.
‘The Marvels’ is rated PG-13 for action/violence and brief language and has a running time of 105 minutes.
