First off, Happy New Year everyone and I hope that 2024 is a good year for all of you Now that the year 2023 has ended and a new year has started, it’s time for me to go through my list of films that I checked out last year and see which ones either made it to my top list and the usual runner ups. So, now let’s get started with my top picks of 2023.
10. Dumb Money — A David vs. Goliath take about everyday people who flipped the script on Wall Street and got rich by turning GameStop (the video game store) into the world’s hottest company. This film is an enjoyable look at the real-life stock hijinks of GameStop. It should be streaming on Netflix during the first couple months of this year.
9. TMNT: Mutant Mayhem — This film follows the brothers as they work to earn the love of NYC while facing down an army of mutants. The TMNT reboot is an awesome fresh take of the series and can currently be streamed on Paramount Plus.
8. Evil Dead Rise — A twisted take of two estranged sisters whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable. This will surely keep horror fans satisfied! The fifth Evil Dead movie can now be streamed on Max.
7. Air — Follows the history of sports marketing exec Sonny Vaccaro, and how he led Nike in its pursuit of the greatest athlete in the history of basketball, Michael Jordan. This fact-based drama is highly entertaining and worth a watch! Air can now be streamed on Amazon.
6. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse — Miles Morales catapults across the multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. When the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles must redefine what it means to be a hero. This animated sequel has incredible surprises and is honestly award-worthy. Across the Spider-Verse can be streamed on Netflix.
5. John Wick: Chapter 4 — John Wick uncovers a path to defeating The High Table. But before he can earn his freedom, Wick must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and forces that turn old friends into foes. There’s plenty of intense action and thrills in this one! The sequel is available to rent on various PVOD platforms.
4. The Super Mario Bros. Movie — A plumber named Mario travels through an underground labyrinth with his brother Luigi, trying to save a captured princess. Fans of the Mario games will really love this one! Bring on the sequel! You can catch this one right on Netflix now.
3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 — Still reeling from the loss of Gamora, Peter Quill rallies his team to defend the universe and one of their own — a mission that could mean the end of the Guardians if not successful. Vol. 3 is definitely the best MCU movie this year! Vol. 3 can now be streamed on Disney Plus.
2. Barbie — Barbie suffers a crisis that leads her to question her world and her existence. Barbie definitely really surprised me and delivers a lot of fun and laughs. One of 2023’s biggest hits can be found on Max.
Now, last year was the first time I had a tie for the No. 1 spot. This time, there is actually a three way tie and couldn’t decide which one of these films can be No. 1:
The Whale — A reclusive, morbidly obese English teacher attempts to reconnect with his estranged teen daughter. This film had plenty of emotion and gave Brendan Fraser a well-earned Oscar.
A Man Called Otto — Otto is a grump who’s given up on life following the loss of his wife and wants to end it all. When a young family moves in nearby, he meets his match in quick-witted Marisol, leading to a friendship that will turn his world around.
Oppenheimer — The story of American scientist, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and his role in the development of the atomic bomb.
And here are some that almost made the cut: Hunger Games; Killers of the Flower Moon; Sound of Freedom; Wonka; Saw X; Five Nights at Freddy’s; The Miracle Club; A Haunting in Venice; The Equalizer 3; Strays; Blue Beetle; No Hard Feelings; Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning; Renfield; Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves; Scream VI; Creed III; Jesus Revolution; Knock at the Cabin; Cocaine Bear; M3GAN.
