A couple nights ago, I finally had the chance to check out the slasher flick Thanksgiving, which was released in theaters last fall. This 2023 Eli Roth flick is currently streaming on Netflix.
Thanksgiving does a great job keeping the slasher genre alive on the big screen ... and now streaming. It really reminds me of some of the 80s and 90s slashers due to the slight campy feel that it delivers.
The 2023 slasher also has a good amount of mystery and suspense scattered throughout. For a horror/slasher, the kills are very inventive and of course there are a few moments where characters do dumb things.
Now, not going into spoilers here ... the twist of the killer's identity is a nice touch and you don't really see it coming. But, after really thinking about it, you do see this character around the others while the killer appears in another area - unless there's an unknown additional killer that is being set aside for a sequel that is set for release in 2025.
Here are some tidbits for Thanksgiving!
The bloody font used for the title card and the end credits is the same font used for the original Grindhouse trailer.
The third movie based on one of the five mock trailers seen in the 2007 movie Grindhouse. Eli Roth directed the Thanksgiving trailer to be shown between Planet Terror and Death Proof when shown as a double feature. Machete, Hobo with a Shotgun and this movie were later made into full-length movies.
With a 84% Rotten Tomatoes score and 63% Metacritic score, weighing the overall critics reviews the movie is the most critically well received Eli Roth horror movie.
The killers costume is inspired directly by the iconic paintings of John Carver who was one of the pilgrims on the Mayflower voyage. The mask they wear is a recreation of Carver's face. The killer in the movie is nicknamed The Carver because of this.
Roth wanted all the movie's kills to be not only gory but creative, paying homage to the creative kills of golden age slashers such as the Friday the 13th franchise, Elm St. series, Happy Birthday to Me and My Bloody Valentine.
In March 2013, TriStar Pictures acquired the US rights to the movie. The horror movie began streaming on Netflix on February 17, 2024.
Thanksgiving has grossed $31.9 million in the US and Canada, and $14.6 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $46.5 million - on a budget of $15 million.
In November 2023, Roth announced on his Instagram page that a sequel had been green-lit for a 2025 release.
