Talking animal 'Strays' hysterical fun comedy

Writer's picture: Matt PalmerMatt Palmer

Over the years, there have been many talking animal movies that were geared for families and the little ones. Yet, there hasn’t been a talking animal movie geared for the R-rated crowd (unless you count ‘Ted’/’Ted 2’) — until now.

Abandoned on the mean city streets by his lowlife owner, Doug, a naïve but lovable dog named Reggie falls in with a fast-talking, foul-mouthed Boston Terrier and his gang of strays.

Determined to seek revenge, Reggie and his new canine pals embark on an epic adventure to get him home and make Doug pay for his dirty deeds.

‘Strays’ is an R-rated comedy that really delivers the raunchy humor and the laughs. Throughout the course of the movie, there are quite a few moments that will really have you laughing.

Many jokes that are scattered throughout can be a little crude at times (hence the R-rating) but they still will give you a good chuckle. There is a sequence in the middle of the comedy where the dogs end up eating a bit of mushrooms and they end up starting to see some weird stuff. This moment is seen in some of the movie’s marketing and it’s still very hilarious.

The cast of the movie also helps keep the laughs going in ‘Strays.’ Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx are extremely hilarious when their characters interact with one another. Even though the main focus of the movie is Reggie, Bug (Foxx’s character) certainly steals the show for sure.

Will Forte, who usually plays really funny characters, does a good enough job playing the lowlife owner of Reggie that you really want to hate the character. And, I will not spoil it here about whether Reggie does or doesn’t get his little bit of revenge.

Now, in between all the raunchy/crude humor that is featured in the movie, there is a little bit of heart and emotion, especially during the scenes where Reggie finally realized that Doug never loved him and when we finally get into Bug’s backstory.

So, make sure to check out this hilarious R-rated comedy. If you’re looking for some crazy antics and raunchy (and hilarious) humor), then ‘Strays is the one for you!

The cast: Will Ferrell as Reggie; Jamie Foxx as Bug; Isla Fisher as Maggie; Randall Park as Hunter; Brett Gelman as Willy; Rob Riggle as Rolf; Josh Gad as Gus; Sofia Vergara as Dolores the Couch; Will Fore as Doug and a surprise cameo that is one of the highlights of this comedy.

‘Strays’ is written by Dan Perrault and directed by Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar).

‘Strays’ is rated R for pervasive language, crude and sexual content, and drug use and has a running time of 93 minutes.

Coming up on the review front — ‘Gran Turismo’, ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3’ and ‘The Nun II.’
