Special Veteran’s Day review - Saving Private Ryan

Writer's picture: Matt PalmerMatt Palmer

For Veteran’s Day, I also wanted to take a look at what could be one of the best World War II films ever released - ‘Saving Private Ryan.’

In the highly acclaimed WWII drama ’Saving Private Ryan,’ Captain John Miller takes his men behind enemy lines to find Private James Ryan, whose three brothers have been killed in combat.

Surrounded by the brutal realities of war, while searching for Ryan, each man embarks upon a personal journey and discovers their own strength to triumph over an uncertain future with honor, decency and courage.

‘Saving Private Ryan’ is a gritty and heart-wrenching film that stands as a monumental achievement in the war genre.

This WWII epic delivers quite a few gripping moments and several scenes that are emotionally-charged. The journey that all the soldiers go through in this film is extraordinarily unforgettable and offers a profound exploration of sacrifice and the human spirit.

As soon as the film starts, it will have you feeling extremely moved and keep you glued to the screen right to the very end. The infamous Normandy invasion sequence is still an intense watch and is still one of the most realistic portrayals of a battle ever on film.

In fact, I still remember reading about how numerous WWII veterans have stated that it was the most realistic portrayal of the Second World War (especially the opening Normandy scenes) that they’ve seen.

All of the characters are really memorable and the performances are top-notch. ‘Saving Private Ryan’ is nothing short of remarkable. Everything from the memorable characters to the incredible (and sometimes) haunting score from John Williams to the realistic portrayal of the war, this film will always be cherished.

It also dives into deeper themes of humanity and sacrifice. Through its incredible storytelling, the film pays tribute to the countless men and women who fought and died during WWII. It also reminds us of the immense impact that fighting a war has on individuals and sacrifices made for the greater good.

‘Saving Private Ryan’ is rated R for intense prolonged realistically graphic sequences of war violence, and for language and has a running time of 170 minutes.

You can find this film on Paramount Plus and on various PVOD rental platforms.
