Rewind to the 80s review - The Goonies

‘The Goonies’ is one of the most popular and memorable movies to come out of the 80s. Since its 1985 initial release, the movie is still enjoyed by many people after all this time. In fact, I still try to catch it when it’s available on streaming - until I remembered I still had the DVD copy of the movie.

Now, for its 40th anniversary (actually turns 40 this June), the Dietrich Theater will be showing ‘The Goonies’ on the big screen on January 19 and 20!

If you need a little refresher - the movie follows a band of adventurous kids who take on the might of a property developing company which plans to destroy their home (among others) to build a country club.

When the children discover an old pirate map in the attic, they follow it into an underground cavern in search of lost treasure but come up against plenty of dangerous obstacles along the way.

‘The Goonies’ is a memorable, energetic movie that can easily appeal to the younger crowd and nostalgic adults alike. This 80s classic still does a good job entertaining everyone with the kids' little treasure hunt and the hilarious antics that ensues!

After revisiting this memorable classic, I still had a great time with it! ‘The Goonies’ gives us quite a few likable characters and a couple of them still steal the show a few times. For example, some of the moments Data has with his supply of gadgets will always make you laugh.

Of course, who can forget Chunk and the “Truffle Shuffle” (which is one of the funniest bits). Chunk also has quite a few other humorous moments, especially when he confesses every little bad thing he’s done to the Fratelli’s. The scenes that also feature Chunk with Sloth can also be some of the best bits as well. And, every time I see Sloth on the screen, I always think of “Hey, you guys.”

The entire scene where the character of Mouth (Corey Feldman) messes with the housekeeper (Rosalita) when he translates what the mother is saying to him can still make you laugh out loud.

‘The Goonies’ also does a fairly decent job blending the humor with a touch of action-adventure moments scattered throughout. As soon as the kids end up finding the caves and the pirate ship (which still looks good), the excitement is still there - even after who knows how many viewings over the years.

So, on January 19 and 20, take the kids out to the Dietrich for a family movie night and have them experience ‘The Goonies’ on the big screen!

Trivia: The pirate ship featured in the film was built from scratch and all shots were filmed in the ship. The cast weren’t allowed to see the ship before the scene was shot, as director Richard Donner wanted to catch their genuine reactions.

The 80s classic grossed $63.9 million domestic, placing it among the top 10 highest grossing films of 1985. A potential sequel has been rumored for many years, yet nothing has ever come to fruition. Honestly, despite this being a highly entertaining movie, I don’t think it really needs a sequel.

‘The Goonies’ is rated PG and has a running time of 114 minutes. The classic is showing at the Dietrich on January 19 (4 pm and 7 pm) and January 20 (7 pm).
