Review - ‘Sonic 3’ is definitely the best of the series (so far)

The ‘Sonic’ movies are one of those rare video game film adaptations that are actually really good and entertaining. The 2020 and 2022 ‘Sonic’ releases ended up becoming hits with movie audiences and fans of the video games. And, after how awesome ‘Sonic 2’ was, anticipation for the third movie was really high.

So, let’s talk about how great ‘Sonic 3’ is and during a showing that I attended, I could tell the other viewers really enjoyed it as well!

Sonic the Hedgehog returns to the big screen this holiday season in his most thrilling adventure yet. Sonic, Knuckles and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before.

With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping and protecting the planet.

Just like the previous two movies, ‘Sonic 3’ really delivers! All of the action sequences that are featured throughout the movie are exciting and visually incredible. The third movie also has some funny moments (mainly from the TWO Jim Carrey’s we get) and some emotional moments that are really well done.

The action moments in this movie are probably some of the best in the entire series as of now. All of the action scenes are really exciting and those moments get bigger and better. One action sequence that is visually great and has also been shown in some of the trailers is the Tokyo scene where they are battling Shadow for the first time.

During that whole sequence we see how powerful their new adversary is and Team Sonic is going to need all the help they can get to take him down. There is another sequence that really stands out and that’s pretty much the entire third act.

I’m not going to go into any spoilers here for those who haven’t seen it yet. In this sequence, we actually see an enraged Sonic who had someone close to him get injured and we see him so close to wanting to get revenge. There are quite a few other reasons why the entire third act is a simply incredible way to end the movie! There’s lots of action, emotion and a few hilarious moments squeezed into the third act that would make this ending really memorable.

The Shadow backstory can be really emotional. As the movie goes on, we see what the new Hedgehog character went through and was tested by the government. Shadow has also befriended a young girl and their story ends on a tragic note.

Before I wrap up my thoughts, I have to (of course) mention Jim Carrey. Well, in fact, we get a special treat and have the double amount of Jim Carrey since he portrays both Ivo Robotnik and his grandfather. Just like the previous movies and just about anything the actor appears in, this movie shows that Carrey still has what it takes to entertain! Quite a few of his scenes are extremely hilarious and the scenes that feature both Robotnik characters will really have you laughing. Some of that changes in the third act - and, again, not spoiling it for you!

‘Sonic 3’ is really enjoyable and if you loved both the video games and the movies, you don’t want to miss their new adventure. SIDE NOTE: Stay during the credits for two extra scenes!

Cast: Jim Carrey (Ivo/Gerald Robotnik); Ben Schwartz (Sonic); Idris Elba (Knuckles); John Wick (I meant Keanu Reeves) as Shadow; Colleen O’Shaughnessey (Tails); Krysten Ritter (Director Rockwell); Lee Majdoub (Agent Stone); James Marsden (Tom); Tika Supter (Maddie); Adam Pally (Wade).

Writers/director: Pat Casey (writer) (‘Sonic’ trilogy; Violent Night); Josh Miller (writer); John Whittington (writer) (‘Sonic’ trilogy; ‘Knuckles’; ‘DC League of Super-Pets’); Jeff Fowler (director) (‘Sonic’ trilogy; first episode of ‘Knuckles’).

Trivia: The filmmakers of the trilogy have mentioned playing both ‘Sonic Adventure 2’ and the ‘Shadow the Hedgehog’ solo game for inspiration. The movie also inspired narrative elements from the 1993 animated Saturday morning TV Series ‘Sonic the Hedgehog.’ This movie also features the iconic theme for the ‘Sonic Adventure 2’ game “Live and Learn.”

Good news for fans - Paramount did green-light a fourth movie! Bad news - you will have to wait until 2027!

‘Sonic 3’ is rated PG for action, some violence, rude humor, thematic elements and mild language  (running time 110 minutes)
