This is a quick take on the 2001 remake/re-imagining from director Tim Burton.
Now, even though the 2001 remake did have a few entertaining moments here and there, this is a remake that really didn't need to be made. Sure, a remake could happen down the road with the current rebooted series that's in progress.
One big difference between this movie and the original is that unlike the classic film where the humans are not intelligent and mute, they're the complete opposite here. And the planet that Wahlberg's character crashes on that features the apes and humans isn't on a future Earth like I expected.
Also, I honestly do not know what to think about the ending of this movie ...
Here are some tidbits for the 2001 re-imagining of Planet of the Apes!
Mark Wahlberg joined the film after meeting with Burton for only five minutes. He was so anxious to work with Burton that he agreed to play any part. Wahlberg dropped out of the role of Linus in the Ocean's 11 remake to do this film.
Charlton Heston and Linda Harrison are the only actors appear in both this film and the 1968 original.
Burton said that he would rather jump out of a window than a direct sequel to this movie --- SAYS ALOT OF WHAT HE THOUGHT OF THIS MOVIE LOL
The production was a difficult experience for Burton. This was largely contributed by Fox's adamant release date of July 2001, which meant that everything from pre-production to editing and VFX work was rushed.
Burton himself insisted that this movie wasn't a "remake" but a "re-imagination" of the OG film; it used the idea of an ape-inhabited planet from the same source material as the OG movie, but ultimately tells a very different story.
Planet of the Apes was released on July 27, 2001, in 3500 theaters across the US and Canada, grossing $68.5 million in its opening weekend. This was the 2nd highest opening weekend of 2001, after Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The film grossed $180 million domestic and $182 million elsewhere, for a worldwide total of $362.2 million.
Due to the mixed critic/fan reaction, 20th Century Fox cancelled a sequel.
