In the film festival selection ‘Linoleum,’ Cameron Edwin, the host of a failing children’s science TV show called “Above & Beyond,” has always had aspirations of being an astronaut. After a mysterious space race era satellite coincidentally falls from space and lands in his backyard, his midlife crisis manifests in a plan to rebuild the machine into his dream rocket.

As his relationship with his wife and daughter start to strain, surreal events begin unfolding around him - a doppelganger moving into the house next door, a car falling from the sky, and an unusual teenage boy forging a friendship with him.

He slowly starts to piece these events together to ultimately reveal that there’s more to his life than he once thought.

‘Linoleum’ is a quirky and surprising film that is extremely creative and even touching at times. This film festival selection delivers a lot of moving moments, a bit of humor and a great performance from the usually hilarious Jim Gaffigan.

During the film, we are introduced to quite a few little stories and sub-plots that we will follow. With all of the strange things happening, it definitely doesn’t make sense at first. But, once you get towards the final moments of the film, everything comes together so nicely.

I really didn’t see the surprise that awaits us at the end and I started to think about all of those weird moments again in a whole new light. The final moments can be quite moving and beautifully wraps everything up.

Jim Gaffigan does an outstanding job in his dramatic role as the failing TV science host. At first, I thought his role could be fairly comedic since it’s Jim Gaffigan after all. But, this is the first time I have seen him give a dramatic performance and Gaffigan shows that he can handle a dramatic role perfectly. And, on a side note, if you have Netflix, make sure to check out his comedy specials!

‘Linoleum’ definitely can be on the slightly quirky side. And, the quirkiness really helps the film out. This is a film that can be both heart-warming and heart-breaking at the same time, especially once you get to the ending. And, I’ll admit the only thing I can’t understand is why the film is called ‘Linoleum.’ Possibly after another viewing I will understand the title more. Other than that, ‘Linoleum’ is a great little indie film that should be checked out during the Fall Film Festival.

The cast: Jim Gaffigan as Cameron/Kent; Rhea Seehorn as Erin; Katelyn Nacon as Nora; Jay Walker as Dr. Fuller; West Duchovny as Darcy; Gabriel Rush as Marc; Michael Ian Black as Tony; Roger Hendricks Simon as Mac and Tony Shaloub as Dr. Alvin.

‘Linoleum’ is written and directed by Colin West, who has mainly created short films before making his feature film debut.

‘Linoleum’ is not rated and has a running time of 101 minutes.
