Two weeks ago I took a look at what could be one of the most anticipated Pixar sequels to be released. My review for this film is now available on here! But, if you haven't seen the sequel yet, I highly suggest you check it out!

So, before I watched the sequel, I gave the 2015 film another look - haven't seen it since initially reviewing it 9 years ago. And this Pixar release is still one of the very best in the animation studio's filmography.

Inside Out is easily an animated masterpiece that is simply astounding. The story isn't only incredible, but it's also quite inventive. The film's animation is easily one of its absolute best!

Just like the recently released sequel, this animated film easily connects with audiences emotionally and you will really feel moved during a few sequences. All of the characters are really hilarious at times and are also very memorable. The imaginary friend character Bing Bong really stands out and his little back story can really have you feeling a little emotional.

So, even if you've seen it many many times, this soon to be modern classic will likely be on everyone's must watch list for generations to come!

Here are quite a few tidbits for this Steven Spielberg classic!

  • According to director Pete Doctor, each motion is based on a shape: Joy is based on a star, Sadness is a teardrop, Anger is a fire brick, Fear is a raw nerve and Disgust is broccoli.

  • Some memory balls in Riley's mind contains scenes from other Pixar movies, such as Carl and Ellie's wedding in Up.

  • The writers considered up to 27 emotions but settled on five to make it less complicated. Some primary emotions that were cut included Surprise, Pride and Trust.

  • Pixar invited Paul Ekman, an American psychologist who is a pioneer in studying emotions and their relation to facial expressions, to brief the crew on the nature of emotions.

  • Received an 8 minute standing ovation at its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

  • The first Pixar feature film with no physical antagonist character. The antagonist is the idea of "things changing."

  • Docter's inspiration for this film came from watching his daughter go through the turbulent part of growing up.

  • The film featured about 45 animators, about half as many as previous Pixar films.

  • Lewis Black was the studio's first, and only, choice to play Anger.

  • The distinct personalities of the different emotions were inspired by the dwarfs in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937).

  • Director Pete Docter's third feature film for Pixar after Monsters, Inc and Up.

  • Early drafts of the script had Riley transported inside her mind to go on the journey as well.

  • Development of Inside Out was actually green-lit in October 2009.

  • During its domestic opening weekend, Inside Out grossed $90.4 million across 3,946 theaters, 3100 of which were in 3D, debuting at No. 2 behind Jurassic World (106.6 million). The weekend total figure made Inside Out the first Pixar film not to debut at No. 1, the biggest No. 2 debut of all time, and the largest opening weekend for any original film (even surpassing Avatar) and was Pixar's second biggest opening after Toy Story 3.

  • After finishing its theatrical run on December 10, 2015, Inside Out had grossed $356.9 million domestic (the sequel already surpassed). In July 2020, due to the worldwide closures of theaters during COVID and limits on which films played, Inside Out returned to 442 theaters - mostly drive ins - and grossed $240,000.

  • Worldwide gross -- $858.8 million.

  • Inside Out received critical acclaim, and was listed on many critics' top lists of 2015.

  • A central theme of the film is the consequences and portrayal of emotions and memories. Those depicted in the film are "honest" and "generous," their goal is maintaining Riley's life.

  • Inside Out is now showing worldwide to very big numbers!!
