‘IF' an imaginative, magical adventure

Writer's picture: Matt PalmerMatt Palmer

Actor/filmmaker John Krasinski brought us a story on the big screen that’s filled with lots of imagination, laughs and great fun for parents and their children.

‘IF’ is about a girl who discovers that she can see everyone’s imaginary friends — and what she does with that superpower — as she embarks on a magical adventure to reconnect forgotten IFs with their kids.

This imaginative and magical adventure can be really creative and does an outstanding job bringing a child’s imagination to life.

The family flick is a truly heart-felt story. The girl that we follow throughout the film — Bea (played by Cailey Fleming) — goes through a lot in this film. Bea goes through the death of her mother while she’s really young and now her father (Krasinski) is about to have a major surgery.

Bea’s story can be rather emotional and heart-warming at times. Once Ryan Reynolds comes into the story, Bea and Cal have quite a few entertaining moments together. When Bea begins to help Cal find people their forgotten imaginary friends, her story becomes more whimsical and heart-warming.

When we get to see all the imaginary friends start appearing, all of them are really entertaining and quite memorable. Blue (voiced by the hilarious Steve Carell) is really hilarious and is one of the main IFs that the movie focuses on.

There are several imaginary friends that we see scattered throughout and a few of them have their own little story (one of which involves someone close to Bea). All of the characters (between the IFs and Bea and Cal) are extremely likable and help keep the

movie really entertaining.

Overall, ‘IF’ is a really intriguing family movie that delivers a lot of great fun that the whole family and the inner child in all of us will really enjoy. There’s also a few surprises along the way that you won’t see coming! And, fair warning, there are a few parts towards the latter half of the movie that may have you tear up just a little.

The cast: Cailey Fleming as Bea; Ryan Reynolds as Cal; John Krasinski as Dad/Marshmallow; Steve Carell as Blue; Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Blossom; Alan Kim as Benjamin; Liza Colon-Zayas as Janet; Bobby Moynihan as Jeremy; Fiona Shaw as the Grandmother and the late great Louis Gossett Jr. as Lewis, among many celebrity voice cameos for the imaginary friends.

‘IF’ is written and directed by John Krasinski, who recently brought us the first two ‘A Quiet Place’ movies and a prequel coming up in June.

In October 2019, Paramount Pictures outbid Lionsgate and Sony, among others, to win the rights to ‘Imaginary Friends’ (original title). ‘IF’ is also one of the last few films that the late Louis Gossett Jr. worked on prior to his death.

‘IF’ is rated PG for thematic elements and mild language and has a running time of 104 minutes.
