HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE - 20TH ANNIVERSARY REVIEW!!

Plot: Sophie has an uneventful life at her late father's shop, but all that changes when she befriends wizard Howl, who lives in a magical flying castle. However, the evil Witch of Waste takes issue with their budding relationship and casts a spell on young Sophie, which ages her prematurely. Now Howl must use all his magical talents to battle her and return Sophie to her former youth and beauty.



The other night I took a look at the acclaimed anime feature Howl's Moving Castle. And, just like any other anime from filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, if you have enjoyed his other works, then Howl's Moving Castle will be right up your alley.


The anime, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, delivers a lot of mesmerizing sequences that anime fans will surely enjoy! From its captivating world-building to its incredible character designs, every aspect of this film shows Miyazaki's unique touch.


Howl's Moving Castle also features some beautiful animation and very unique characters. All of the characters have their own small personal journey and they are the heart of the story.


The film also tackles some complex themes and is a tale of love, acceptance and the power of self-discovery. Howl's Moving Castle can currently be streamed on the Max streaming service!


  • Upon seeing Spirited Away, Christian Bale immediately agreed to play any role in this film. He didn't expect to get the titular role.

  • Although the film wasn't released in the UK until September 23, 2005, Miyazaki personally traveled to England in the summer of 2004 to give a private showing of the film to author Diana Wynne Jones.

  • The film features a moment with Bale's distinct growl, which he would later use in Batman Begins. He was preparing for his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman during the recording.

  • This film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Welsh author Diana Wynne Jones.

  • Nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2006 Academy Awards.

  • Howl's Moving Castle contains strong ant-war themes, influenced by Miyazaki's distaste for the 2003 Iraq War.

  • In September 2001, Studio Ghibli announced the production of two films. The first would become The Cat Returns and the second was an adaptation of the Jones novel.

  • Mamoru Hosoda of Toei Animation was originally selected to direct the film, but quit the project after Studio Ghibli's executives rejected many of his concept ideas. The film was shelved until Miyazaki took over. The project resumed production in February 2003.

  • The film opened at the 61st Venice Film Festival in 2004. The film grossed $14.5 million in its first week of release in Japan alone. The feature was distributed by Toho, and made $140 million in Japan.

  • Howl's Moving Castle was later dubbed into English under the supervision of Pete Docter of Pixar, and released by Disney on June 10, 2003. It was one of the most commercially successful Japanese films ever made.
