Happy Holiday Series - ‘The Christmas Chronicles’ A Holiday Must See

Writer's picture: Matt PalmerMatt Palmer

In Netflix’s ‘The Christmas Chronicles,’ siblings Kate and Teddy Pierce hatch a scheme to capture Santa Claus on Christmas Eve.

When the plan goes awry, the kids join forces with a somewhat jolly Saint Nick and his loyal elves to save the holiday before it’s too late.

‘The Christmas Chronicles’ is honestly one of the most heart-felt, entertaining holiday movies I have recently seen. This Netflix movie delivers a lot of good laughs and emotion.

In the movie, we see the two siblings who used to be really close. Yet, slowly pulled away after the tragic, untimely death of their father and this Christmas marks the first holiday without him. During a few of the scenes where we see them think about their father, it can be really moving and make you a little teary-eyed.

‘The Christmas Chronicles’ also can give you a good laugh. There are several scenes scattered throughout the movie that are really hilarious, such as when Santa and the kids end up using a stolen car to find his missing reindeer and get involved in a car chase with the police. There are so many other moments that will make you laugh out loud with the whole family.

My favorite scene in the movie is where Santa ends up getting himself in the holding cell after the little chase. And to lift up the Christmas spirit, he ends up jamming out with everyone in the holding cell and is easily one of the best scenes of this holiday treat. Kurt Russell also does an awesome job as Saint Nick and someone close to the actor also makes a small cameo at the end (not spoiling it if you haven’t seen the movie).

Cast: Kurt Russell (Santa); Judah Lewis (Teddy); Darby Camp (Kate); Oliver Hudson (Doug); Kimberly Williams-Paisley (Claire); Vella Powell (Wendy); Martin Roach (Officer Poveda); Lamorne Morris (Officer Jameson).

Writer/director: Matt Lieberman (writer) (Rumble; Free Guy; Christmas Chronicles: Part Two); Clay Kaytis (director) (A Christmas Story Christmas; The Angry Birds Movie)

Trivia: Early development of the movie actually began in June 2013. During its first week of streaming, Netflix reported the movie was streamed by 20 million households. A sequel (Christmas Chronicles 2) was released on November 25, 2020.

Rating: PG for mild action/violence and brief language   (running time 104 minutes)

Where to find the movie? You can find this film (along with its sequel) on Netflix.

  • The mint condition Mickey Mantle rookie card given to a man in the restaurant and then torn up by his wife was sold in 2018 for $2.88 million.

  • Santa's list includes several of Kurt Russell's grandchildren.

  • The kid who asks for a snowboard in the video letters is Kurt's actual grandson Bing Bellamy, his mother is Kurt's daughter, Kate Hudson and his father is Muse frontman Matthew Bellamy.

  • The valet of the restaurant is seen sitting at his booth watching his iPad with headphones. He is watching Stranger Things, a staple in the Netflix family.
