GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE RE-VISIT!!

Writer's picture: Matt PalmerMatt Palmer

Some 37 years ago, movie audiences were introduced to the world of the ‘Ghostbusters.’ The movie ended up becoming one of the biggest hits of 1984 and, to this day, people still enjoy the movie. In 1989, the original team came back to bust more ghosts in ‘Ghostbusters II.’ The first sequel did receive a mixed critical reaction, yet still became a moderate hit. The franchise sort of came back with a 2016 remake/reboot, which didn’t fare so well. In the ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife,’ after being evicted from their home, a single mother and her two children are forced to move to a decayed farmhouse in Summerville, Okla., left to them by the children’s late grandfather, where a series of unexplained earthquakes are occurring despite not being situated on any fault. Also, strange things are happening in an old mine shaft which once belonged to an alleged cultist Ivo Shandor. The children discover the history of their grandfather with the original Ghostbusters, who have since been legally forgotten by the world beyond their fan base. When supernatural phenomena relating to New York City's “Manhattan Cross Rip of 1984” occur and threaten the world, the kids, along with some friends, must solve the decades-old mystery of the relocation of their grandfather and become their successors to save it. ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife' is an extremely entertaining and generally well-made follow up to the original movies. The anticipated sequel delivers amazing visuals and great new characters. ‘Afterlife’ gets really interesting once the children know of their grandfather’s legacy and get the old ghost equipment up and running again. Fans of the original movies will really enjoy this. I really enjoyed nitpicking through the hidden Easter eggs and references that the filmmakers put into the movie. This long-awaited sequel is really thought out and, just like the 1984 original, is funny at times. Most of the laughs come from actor Paul Rudd, who can be funny in just about everything he is in. ‘Afterlife’ also has a nice nostalgic feeling and shows great respect to the original. This sequel does an incredible job re-introducing the series to a new generation and reminding other fans of why they enjoy this franchise. Also, the special appearances of the original Ghostbusters and a couple other characters from the original makes seeing the movie really worth it. And, the movie also has a nice dedication for the late ‘Ghostbuster’ actor Harold Ramis. So, make sure to check out ‘Afterlife’ on the big screen at the Dietrich. Filled with visually stunning ghost-busting moments, loads of fun for everyone and a feeling of nostalgia, this long-awaited movie is worth a look. Also, stick around for a couple of end-credit scenes: one is just for fun and the other could lead into a potential new movie.

The cast: Carrie Coon (The Nest) as Callie; Paul Rudd (Avengers: Endgame) as Grooberson; Finn Wolfhard (Netflix’s Stranger Things) as Trevor; Mckenna Grace (Malignant) as Phoebe; Logan Kim as Podcast; Celeste O’Connor (Freaky) as Lucky; Bokeem Woodbine (Netflix’s Spenser Confidential; Overlord) as Sheriff Domingo - and special appearances from Bill Murray (Venkman), Dan Aykroyd (Ray Stantz and Ernie Hudson (Zeddemore), along with Annie Potts as Janine Melnitz (the secretary from the originals) and Sigourney Weaver as Dana Barrett. ‘Afterlife’ is written by Gil Kenan and Jason Reitman (The Front Runner; Up in the Air) and also directed by Reitman. ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ is rated PG-13 for supernatural action and some suggestive references and has a running time of 124 minutes.
