The ‘Mad Max’ series has been having some crazy cinematic adventures since its debut in 1979. Starting with ‘Mad Max’ in 1979, the original series spawned two sequels: Mad Max 2 (1981) and Max Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985). Even though these movies weren’t major hits, they ultimately gained a cult following. FYI - The ‘Mad Max’ movies are currently streaming on the Max streaming platform.
The series came back in 2015 with ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ which earned great reviews and featured a lot of awesome non-stop action. Now, a prequel featuring the stand out ‘Fury Road’ character, Furiosa, is finally on the big screen after a really long wait in ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.’
Snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers, young Furiosa falls into the hands of a great biker horde led by the warlord Dementus.
Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel, presided over by Immortan Joe.
As the two tyrants fight for dominance, Furiosa soon finds herself in a non-stop battle to make her way home.
Just like the incredibly explosive ‘Max Max: Fury Road,’ this prequel delivers a lot of action that is amazingly shot. Let’s just say if you are a big action fan, you definitely won’t leave disappointed.
‘Furiosa’ is a compelling back-story for the popular character from ‘Fury Road.’ When we see her being taken at a young age in the opening minutes of the movie, her mother tries to track her down in a very tense, and even a little suspenseful, motorcycle chase.
As we get into the origin story even more, we slowly get to see how Furiosa turned into the fearsome, tough warrior that we see in the 2015 movie. During her journey, Furiosa deals with a sadistic lead of a biker gang and is introduced to Immortan Joe (who ends up being the main villain in ‘Fury Road’).
All of the action sequences will really blow you away. The action is visually compelling, and at times, extremely intense. There’s an action sequence that lasts roughly 15 minutes and it's one of the many action highlights of the movie. This action-packed epic will have your eyes glued to the screen from start to finish!
Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth do an exceptional job as Furiosa and Dementus, respectively. Initially played by Charlize Theron in the 2015 movie, Joy gives it her all in this role and absolutely knocks it out of the park.
Hemsworth gives one of his best performances as the movie’s main villain, Dementus. The villain can be a little on the unhinged side (maybe more than a little) and he does have a couple little moments of dark humor.
Overall, ‘Furiosa’ is an interesting and tense epic prequel that a lot of action fans (and fans of the series) will really enjoy. It’s filled with tense action and some compelling visual effects, even though some of the CGI can be a little distracting at times. ‘Furiosa’ is an epic movie that is not to be missed!
The cast: Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa; Chris Hemsworth as Dementus; Tom Burke as Praetorian Jack; Lachy Hulme as Immortan Joe; John Howard as The People Eater; Angus Sampson as Organic Mechanic and Charlee Fraser as Mary Jabassa, among many others.
‘Furiosa’ is written by Nico Lathouris and George Miller (both writers of ‘Fury Road’) and directed by Miller (Fury Road; Mad Max 1-3).
A prequel to ‘Fury Road’ has actually been in development since the 2015 movie. The script was already completed after ‘Fury Road’ was finished, but production hit several hurdles along the way.
‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ is rated R for sequences of strong violence, and grisly images and has a running time of 148 minutes.
Coming up on the review front - ‘The Garfield Movie,’ ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ and ‘Inside Out 2.’
