'Equalizer 3’ a satisfying action sequel

Writer's picture: Matt PalmerMatt Palmer

‘The Equalizer’ trilogy started in 2014, and everyone who has seen it really enjoyed seeing Denzel in action mode. Both the 2014 movie and its 2018 sequel, ‘The Equalizer 2,’ became decent-sized hits at the box office and a third movie was inevitable.

Now, it’s time to see his Robert McCall character come back, potentially for the final time, in ‘The Equalizer 3.’

Since giving up his life as a government assassin, Robert McCall has struggled to reconcile the horrific things he’s done in the past and finds a strange solace in serving justice on behalf of the oppressed.

Finding himself surprisingly at home in Southern Italy, he discovers his new friends are under the control of local crime bosses.

As events turn deadly, McCall knows what he has to do: become his friends’ protector by taking on the mafia.

Just like the previous two entries, ‘The Equalizer 3 ‘ delivers more tense action and Denzel Washington is just as awesome as always.

This final chapter (so far ‘final chapter) of the action trilogy is a satisfying conclusion of the series. Seeing the McCall character go up against the Italian mafia really can be quite as tense as expected. The story of McCall wanting to protect his new friends from the mafia is a great plot point as well.

The action that is featured in this movie can be really fun to watch and fans of the first two movies will surely enjoy it. The action in this sequel does seem to be not as much as the others, yet the action we get will satisfy all action fanatics and the action can get a little bloody at times.

Another thing I really enjoyed with this entry of the series is seeing all the Italian scenery and some of the cinematography of the coastal shots are really nice. It was also really cool to see Denzel Washington share the screen with Dakota Fanning once again. For those who don’t remember, Fanning and Washington both starred together in the 2004 movie ‘Man on Fire’ (probably one of Denzel’s best movies). And, wow 2004 is almost 20 years ago.

Overall, ‘The Equalizer 3’ is an enjoyable action sequel. I honestly hope they eventually make a fourth movie down the road. I mean, in the movie business, just because it’s the “final chapter” doesn’t really mean it actually will be. If not, this actually marks a nice way to cap off the trilogy.

Some of the cast includes: Denzel Washington as Robert McCall; Eugenio Mastrandera as Gio Bonucci; David Denman as Frank Conroy; Gaia Scodellano as Aminah; Remo Girone as Enzo Arisio; Daniela Penone as Angelo; Andrea Scarduzio as Vincent Queranta; and Dakota Fanning as Emma Collins.

‘The Equalizer 3’ is written by Richard Wenk (The Equalizer 1 and 2; The Protege) and directed by Antoine Fuqua (Equalizer 1 and 2; Apple TVs Emancipation).

‘The Equalizer 3’ is rated R for strong bloody violence and some language and has a running time of 109 minutes.

And don’t forget to keep on checking my Wyoming County Press Examiner reviews Facebook page to see what I have coming up next, which includes ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3,’ ‘The Nun II’,’ ‘A Haunting in Venice’ and already have planned out my picks for the upcoming Fall Film Festival.
