The heart-warming and funny film ‘Dog’ showing at Dietrich on Nov. 13

The Dietrich Theater will be showing the 2022 film ‘Dog’ on November 13 as part of their Dietrich Film Favorite Series. I remember reviewing this film for the paper when it was initially released. And, since I haven’t seen the film since, I decided it was time to revisit it!

‘Dog’ is a buddy comedy that follows the misadventures of two former Army Rangers paired against their will on the road trip of a lifetime. Army Rangers Briggs and Lulu buckle into a 1984 Ford Bronco and race down the Pacific Coast in hopes of making it to a fellow soldier’s funeral.

Along the way, they’ll drive each other completely crazy, break a small handful of laws, narrowly evade death, and learn to let down their guards in order to have a fighting chance of finding happiness.

‘Dog’ is a truly heartwarming story that also delivers some decent laughs. It also tells a sensitive story about the long road to healing after experiencing the horrors of war.

This 2022 film does a great job with giving us some funny moments in an otherwise dramatic and moving film. There are some scenes featuring Briggs and Lulu that can really make you laugh out loud, especially where Briggs uses Lulu to get a free hotel room by pretending to be blind.

There is also a good amount of dramatic and emotional moments towards the second half of the film. When they finally make it to their fellow soldier’s funeral, we get to see Lulu become a little erratic. That entire scene, as well as shortly after where we see Lulu being sent to potentially be euthanized, it can really make you tear up a bit.

‘Dog’ also has some feel-good moments where we see Lulu and Briggs bonding and becoming closer. The film also touches upon the tough topic of PTSD and we see Briggs suffer a few panic attacks as well.

‘Dog’ is rated PG-13 for language, thematic elements, drug content and some suggestive material and has a running time of 101 minutes.

The 2022 film is showing at the Dietrich Theater Wednesday, November 13 at 1 pm and 7 pm as part of their Dietrich Film Favorite Series. If you don’t get a chance to see this free showing of ‘Dog,’ the film is also currently streaming on Tubi.
