“Dog Man”: A Silly Fun, Energetic Family Film

Writer's picture: Matt PalmerMatt Palmer

“Dog Man” is a comedic graphic novel series created by Dav Pilkey as a full spin-off book series after “Captain Underpants” ended with its 12th entry. This popular book series has a total of 13 books so far, with the latest book, “Dog Man: Big Jim Begins” released last December and a 14th book (“Dog Man: Big Jim Believes”) set for release this fall.

Now, the popular book series makes its way to the big screen from DreamWorks Animation for the entire family to sit back and enjoy!

When a faithful police dog and his human police officer owner are injured together on the job, a harebrained but life-saving surgery fuses the two of them together and Dog Man is born! Dog Man is swoon to protect and serve - and fetch, sit and roll over.

As Dog Man embraces his new identity and strives to impress the Chief, he must stop the pretty evil plots of feline supervillain Petey the Cat.

Petey’s latest plan to clone himself, creating the kitten Li’l Petey gets complicated when Li’l Petey forges an unexpected bond with Dog Man.

The latest film from DreamWorks Animation, “Dog Man” delivers a lot of comedic energy that never lets up. This animated film will easily delight both children and their parents with a lot of humorous moments and some heart-felt ones as well.

One of the funniest moments in this movie is when we see a montage of prison escapes with the cat supervillain Peter (voiced by the hilarious Pete Davidson) and we see Dog Man try to capture him again and again. There’s also many other scenes featuring Dog Man and Chief that are really hysterical.

In between all of the hilarious scenes scattered throughout this past-faced family movie, the movie also delivers some sentimental scenes, especially once Li’l Petey enters the scene. All of his scenes with Dog Man are really touching, especially as he gets closer to Dog Man (since he’s all alone). There’s also a few scenes where we see the villain Petey actually get a little moved with his mini clone, which adds a nice moving touch to the movie.

Overall, “Dog Man” is a great animated movie and a great choice for a family movie night at the theater!
