The ‘Despicable Me’ franchise has been extremely popular since the series started in 2010. Since the 2010 animated movie became a huge hit, it spawned three sequels (including this one) and 2 spin-offs (the ‘Minions’ movies), all becoming huge hits.

Now, let’s see what Gru and his family - and, of course, those minions - are up to in this all-new adventure with ‘Despicable Me 4.’

In the first installment of the main series since 2017, Gru, the world’s favorite supervillain-turned-Anti -Villain-League agent, returns for an all new adventure filled with mayhem and Minions antics.

Recently, Gru has welcomed a new member to the family, Gru Jr., who’s intent on tormenting his dad.

However, their peaceful existence soon comes crashing down when criminal mastermind Maxime Le Mal escapes from prison and vows revenge against Gru.

It’s hard to believe that the last time we had a ‘Despicable Me’ movie was in 2017 - not counting the ‘Minions’ movies. And, ‘Despicable Me 4’ really doesn’t disappoint. This sequel delivers a lot of fun-filled moments, and this family adventure really brings the laughs.

In this new adventure, we get introduced to some new characters that Gru and his family end up meeting during their new journey together. There’s one character, Poppy, who may seem like a weird teenager, but wants to become a super-villain one day.

Gru and his family try to act like a normal family, which always ends with truly hysterical moments. The minions, just like any other installment, steals the show, along with Gru Jr. With the audience reactions to the movie during the showing I attended, they really enjoy the Gru Jr. character.

There is a heist sequence towards the latter half of the movie that is really entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable. Some of this sequence has appeared in numerous trailers and is still one of the many highlights of this animated sequel. Also, we get to see a few of the minions become “Mega Minions”, which really brought the laughs.

‘Despicable Me 4’ can have a predictable story at times, yet families and children will still have an amazing time. The animation is great (like usual), the humor will have the little ones laughing and plenty of Minions fun to go around!

The cast: Steve Carell as Gru; Will Ferrell as Maxime; Sofia Vergara as Valentina; Kristen Wiig as Lucy; Chris Renaud as Principal Ubelschlecht; Dana Geier as Edith; Madison Polon as Agnes; Miranda Cosgrove as Margo; Joey King as Poppy Prescott and Stephen Colbert as Perry Prescott, among others.

‘Despicable Me 4’ is written by Mike White (Migration; The One and Only Ivan) and Ken Daurio (Migration; Despicable Me 3) and directed by Chris Renaud (The Secret Life of Pets 2) and Patrick Delage.

A fourth movie has been in development since the release of Despicable Me 3 in 2017 and was officially confirmed in February 2022.

‘Despicable Me 4’ is rated PG for action and rude humor and has a running time of 95 minutes.
