A reboot/reimagining of ‘The Crow’ has been in some sort of development for quite some time. In fact, this film was announced to be in development all the way back to 2008 and has had numerous hurdles ever since.
Now, after a long, long wait, ‘The Crow’ finally arrives on the big screen. And, even though this reimagining is not nearly as good as the 1994 iteration, it does have some entertaining qualities.
In this modern reimagining of the iconic graphic novel, soulmates Eric and Shelly are brutally killed when demons of her dark past catch up with them.
Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.
This reimagining of ‘The Crow’ is really different from its 1994 predecessor. This movie really delivers on the darkness and the action can get really intense, especially towards the end of the movie (which I’ll get to shortly).
‘The Crow 2024’ does feature some moments that can be a little on the mysterious side, such as Shelly’s dark past. In the middle of the movie, we do find out about her past, which involves some people who may have been involved with Shelly and Eric’s death.
The Shelly/Eric story can be a little chaotic at times, especially once Eric finds out that people are after Shelly for an unknown reason. Bill Skarsgard does a decent job portraying this iteration’s version of Eric Draven. No matter what role he plays, Skarsgard always gives a decent performance (even if it’s not nearly as great as his terrifying turn as Pennywise in the recent ‘It’ movies).
Now, even though this film is simply a reimagining of the graphic novel and not the previous film, the Shelly/Eric story in the 1994 version does feature more emotion than this current version. A little bit of emotion comes into play once we see Eric trying to work with his spirit guide and wanting to bring Shelly back.
The opera scene during the conclusion of the movie can get a tad chaotic. During this sequence, we get to see Draven fulfill his revenge and the whole sequence can get really crazy (and really bloody).
Overall, despite its severely mixed to negative reactions from fans and critics, this iteration of ‘The Crow’ is still entertaining at times. Surely, the 1994 movie is far superior between the two, but just remember, these two versions are completely different in their own way. So, if you are a fan of the 1994 version, give this iteration a shot and, just like the other film, this could also become a cult classic down the road.
The cast: Bill Skarsgard as Eric; FKA twigs as Shelly; Danny Huston as Vincent Roeg; Josette Simon as Sophia; Laura Birn as Marion; Karel Dobry as Roman; Jordan Bolger as Chance; Sebastian Orozco as Dorm; David Bowles as Wickham and Sami Bouajila as Kronos.
‘The Crow 2024’ is written by Zach Baylin (Bob Marley: One Love; Creed III; King Richard) and William Josef Schneider and directed by Rupert Sanders (Ghost in the Shell; Snow White and the Huntsman).
Throughout the years, many actors have been attached to portray Eric Draven at one point, such as Bradley Cooper, Jason Mamoa, Channing Tatum and Nicholas Hault, just to name a few. The 2024 look of the Eric Draven character is loosely based on the character’s look in the graphic novel.
‘The Crow’ is rated R for strong bloody violence, gore, language, sexuality/nudity, and drug use and has a running time of 111 minutes.
