After the first two sequels were okay at best, I was hoping that Conquest of the Planet of the Apes would be pretty decent. And, this sequel is actually kind of interesting.
This 1972 sequel actually reflects and deals with the theme of racism, facism and slavery a lot more than the previous entries. You can really see this alot when we see a lot of the humans treating the apes poorly and being trained as pets - we learn that a virus wiped out all dogs and cats inbetween films.
Also in Conquest, we also get to see the apes being enslaved for "lower class" work. And having Ceasar, the son of Zira and Cornelius, being the main character helps keep this film going. Caesar is a powerful, intriguing character and he see first hand what's being done to the apes and slowly plans to take matters into his own hands.
During the final act of the film where we see the apes revolting and starting a riot with the humans, it's a tense look at the very beginnings of how the ape world slowly starts. And, just like the previous sequels, the budget limitations has affected the film a little bit with the visual effects. But, nonetheless, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes is one of the better entries of this franchise.
Here are a couple little tidbits for Conquest of the Planet of the Apes!
An original script draft showed more of the rapid evolution of the apes from primitive to intelligent and shows the progression of apes from pets to slaves. ***This would've been very intriguing***
The film takes place 18 years after the events of Escape from the Planet of the Apes.
Screenwriter Paul Dehn wrote the film incorporating references to the racial conflicts in the US during the early 1970s and Thompson further highlighted by shooting some scenes in a manner similar to a news broadcast.
Final domestic gross - $9.7 million
