‘Blue Beetle’ a refreshing superhero flick

Writer's picture: Matt PalmerMatt Palmer

The DC Comics character Blue Beetle is a Mexican-American superhero that has appeared in numerous comics over the years since 1939. Throughout the course of the Blue Beetle’s ongoing time at DC Comics, the character has gone through three iterations — Dan Garret, Ted Kord and Jaime Reyes (the most recent iteration in both the new comics and this movie that I just reviewed).

Now, Blue Beetle finally makes his big screen debut in this original story that is honestly one of the better movies that DC has recently released.

Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it.

As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology — the Scarab.

When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero Blue Beetle.

‘Blue Beetle’ is definitely a major improvement of the last few DC film adaptations. Even though ‘The Flash’ was actually not that bad and the ‘Shazam’ sequel was just okay, ‘Blue Beetle’ is the one movie that feels fresh and is something that the DC brand needs. This adaptation of the character delivers some really exciting action, some really funny moments and even some heart-warming moments scattered about.

There are some very likable characters featured in the movie. The Reyes Family is heavily focused throughout the feature and all of the actors that portray the family are just amazing. With how the actors portrayed their respective members of the family, you would really think they are a real family and the actors have such amazing chemistry.

George Lopez absolutely steals the show as Uncle Rudy. In almost every scene that he appears in, the Rudy character does an outstanding job being the comedic relief for the movie. I mean, come on, he’s George Lopez — of course, he’s going to be funny. Lopez also has a few serious moments in the movie that can be a little heart-felt as well. In fact, all of the family members have their own little humorous moments here and there that will really make you laugh.

‘Blue Beetle’ delivers some really awesome fast-paced action as well. Once Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle starts getting used to the new suit, the action really picks up from there. A lot of the action is extremely entertaining and also visually great to look at. There is an entire sequence between Blue Beetle and another character in a new tech suit that is one of the major action-packed highlights of the movie.

In between all of the action and laughs that occur during the origin story, there are some segments that can be a little on the emotional side and some of the emotion helps with the movie’s story.

Overall, this movie really keeps you entertained from beginning to end and there is a scene during the credits that gives a potential hint of what’s to come for a possible sequel. And, even though the DC universe will be getting a face lift down the road, I hope we get to see these characters again.

Some of the cast: Xolo Mariduena as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle; Bruna Marquezine as Jenny Kord; Adriana Barraza as Nana; Damian Alcazar as Alberto Reyes; Raoul Max Trujillo as Ignacio Carapaz/OMAC; Belissa Escobedo as Milagro Reyes; Harvey Guillen as Dr. Sanchez; Becky G as the voice of Khaji-Da and George Lopez as Rudy Reyes.

‘Blue Beetle’ is written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and directed by Angel Manuel Soto.

‘Blue Beetle’ is rated PG-13 for sequences of action and violence, language, and some suggestive references and has a running time of 127 minutes.
