Beetlejuice finally made it back to the big screen in the highly anticipated ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,’ a sequel over three decades in the making. And to gear up for the sequel (which fans will love), I decided to check out the iconic 1988 movie once again!
If you need a quick refresher of the plot, after Barbara and Adam Maitland die in a car accident, they find themselves stuck haunting their country residence, unable to leave the house.
When the unbearable Deetzes and teen daughter Lydia buy the home, the Maitlands attempt to scare them away without success.
Their efforts attract Beetlejuice, a rambunctious spirit whose “help” quickly becomes dangerous for the Maitlands and innocent Lydia.
Tim Burton’s ‘Beetlejuice’ is one of the most imaginative, visually captivating movies to ever come out of the 1980s. The fan favorite movie can be offbeat at times, but in the best way possible.
All of the visual effects that are featured in the movie still look great and the practical effects/claymation effects really gives ‘Beetlejuice’ a B-movie feel - which is what Burton planned on having the feel of the movie to be. And, honestly, the B-movie vibe really makes the movie work! The sandworm creature that’s in the movie stills looks great today and is one of the best visual effects in this movie.
‘Beetlejuice’ also has some quirky humor that will have you laughing - especially once Michael Keaton’s iconic character starts his antics. There are several moments in the movie where Beetlejuice appears on screen where something memorable and humorous happens.
The 1988 classic also features some very iconic moments that are extremely memorable, especially the dinner “Day-O” scene. The entire sequence is easily one of the funniest bits in this classic 80s flick! Let me know on my Wyoming County Press Examiner reviews page your favorite part of the movie.
The idea of the movie actually came after another 80s supernatural flick ‘Poltergeist’ became a hit movie, but the idea of bad ghosts was flipped. The people who moved into the house would be the awful ones.
The studio originally wanted to call the movie ‘House Ghosts.’ As a joke, Burton suggested the name ‘Scared Sheetless’ and was horrified when the studio actually considered using it. Burton also feared the “Day-O” sequence wouldn’t go over well since, in his opinion, it wasn’t very funny. Burton turned out to be wrong since audiences loved it and think of it as one of the film’s most iconic scenes.
The 1988 classic ‘Beetlejuice’ is rated PG and has a running time of 92 minutes.
If you want to revisit this awesome 80s classic, ‘Beetlejuice’ is currently streaming on the Max streaming platform.
