I finally got to Battle for the Planet of the Apes, which is the fifth and final installment of the original Apes series. The fifth entry does have some entertaining moments and does start to slowly connect to the first two movies, Battle just isn't as great as expected.

The really low budget really makes this sequel sometimes feel like a 90 minute TV movie - especially with apes costumes and the final act conflict.

In this sequel, we get to see the apes appear in the clothing that we see them wear in the 1968 classic. We also get to see the early start of Ape City, which is really cool to see. Battle for the Planet of the Apes also shows us the origin of the mutated humans we see in the first sequel.

Battle for the Planet of the Apes can be all over the place at times, which can really make this movie feel like the weakest of the original franchise.

Here are some tidbits for Battle for the Planet of the Apes!

  • This is supposedly the film that inspired Tony Mendez to create the operation "Argo" during the Iran hostage crisis from 1979 to 1981 in which he traveled to Iran in disguise as a film producer and had the hostages disguised as a film crew in order to flee the country.

  • Director J. Lee Thompson was very unhappy about the budget limitations imposed on him. He had to agree to direct the film before a final screenplay was in place.

  • The previous entry - Conquest of the Planet of the Apes - had incurred some criticism for being too violent. The intent with this sequel was that it would be more appealing to families and children in particular.

  • Battle for the Planet of the Apes grossed a domestic total of $8.8 million, making it the lowest grossing film in the series.
