'Argylle' a clever, fun spy adventure

Writer's picture: Matt PalmerMatt Palmer

Director Matthew Vaughn has brought to the big screen some highly entertaining films over the years. Vaughn has directed ‘X-Men: First Class,’ ‘Kick-Ass,’ and the 2004 indie film ‘Layer Cake.’

Recently, the director has been creating some great spy fun with the ‘Kingsman’ movies.

Now, the talented and creative filmmaker has brought us another creative and extremely entertaining spy action-comedy with ‘Argylle.’

Elly Conway is a reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and cat, Alfie.

But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books — which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate — begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past.

Accompanied by Aiden, a cat-allergic spy, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur.

‘Argylle’ is a fun spy movie that will really leave you entertained and even at the edge of your seat during a few action sequences. This spy movie is also a good time on the big screen!

The latest spy movie from Matthew Vaughn delivers some really great action/fight sequences, really hilarious moments and some moments that can be rather nonsensical. There are quite a few scenes that are over the top and slightly absurd at times. But, honestly, the over the top moments really work out well for this movie!

The action/fight scenes really are great. One of the sequences that stands out for me is when Elly is introduced to Aiden (played by the always great Sam Rockwell) on a train where an ambush of spies attempts to get to Elly. A little bit of this scene can be seen during the trailers.

‘Argylle’ also delivers some cheesy, silly moments here and there as well. But, just like the over the top moments, the cheesiness works. Even though the set up of the movie almost makes it seem like a typical spy thriller, there are a lot of fun moments scattered throughout that you really enjoyable.

The ensemble cast is also great. Rockwell delivers some really humorous moments and also has a few stand out action-packed moments where his character kicks some spy butt. Henry Cavill also is awesome as the spy Argylle and while watching this movie, I really think he could make a great 007.

Overall, ‘Argylle’ is great entertainment that you can easily turn off your mind for a couple hours and simply enjoy. The spy movie also delivers some twists and turns (actually there’s quite a few) that are really surprising. If you enjoyed the fun that Vaughn created for the ‘Kingsman’ movies, then I’m certain you’ll love this one. Also make sure to stay for a small end credit scene for a hint of where this potential franchise could go.

The cast: Bryce Dallas Howard as Elly Conway; Sam Rockwell as Aiden; Bryan Cranston as Ritter; Henry Cavill as Agent Aryglle; Catherine O’Hara as Ruth Conway, Sofia Boutella as Saba Al-Badr; Dua Lipa as LaGrange; Ariana DeBose as Keira; John Cena as Wyatt and Samuel L. Jackson as Alfred Solomon.

‘Argylle’ is written by Jason Fuchs (I Still See You; Pan; Wonder Woman) and directed by Matthew Vaughn (the Kingsman movies; X-Men: First Class).

The spy movie was announced to be in development in June 2021 and Apple purchased the rights to the movie that August for $200 million. Director Matthew Caughn described the movie as his ode to 1980s action movies like ‘DIe Hard’ and ‘Lethal Weapon.’ If ‘Argylle’ is a success, there are plans to create more movies and turn it into a franchise.

‘Argylle’ is rated PG-13 for strong violence and action and some strong language and has a running time of 139 minutes.
