The 2018 movie, ’Aquaman,’ is probably one of the best installments of the DC Extended Universe (or DCEU for short). This 2018 DC Comics adaptation is also the only entry in the DC cinematic universe to crack the $1 billion mark worldwide.
The long-awaited sequel finally arrives in theaters, which also marks the final installment of the DCEU. The DC universe is getting the soft reboot treatment starting in 2025. So, let me know on Facebook what your favorite DCEU movie is. Now, let’s get to the review!
After failing to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Mata wields the power of the mythic Black Trident to unleash an ancient and malevolent force.
Hoping to end his reign of terror, Aquaman forces an unlikely alliance with his brother, Orm the former King of Atlantis.
Setting aside their differences, they join forces to protect their kingdom and save the world from irreversible destruction.
‘Aquaman 2’ is a direct follow up to the 2018 movie that has been in development since the first movie was still playing in theaters. The sequel delivers a good amount of action and comedy that the previous movie did a good job delivering.
Just like the first movie, this sequel shows that Jason Mamoa is still entertaining as ever as Arthur Curry/Aquaman. The Aquaman character has some very humorous one-liners scattered throughout and the scenes that he shares with his brother Orm are very amusing.
There are quite a few moments between Aquaman and Orm that really remind me of some buddy comedies. I won’t be going into spoiler territory at all, but Orm (once again played by Patrick Wilson) has a really awesome redemption arc in the movie. Even though a lot of the Aquaman/Orm moments can be really fun to watch, a little bit of the comedy can be a little silly at times.
The visual effects that are in the sequel are incredible and the underwater sequences are visually the best. Black Manta is back for revenge in the ‘Aquaman’ sequel, which despite having the typical revenge story, it’s one of the best segments of the movie.
One thing that some DCEU fans probably won’t like is that this will be the last time Jason
Mamoa will be portraying the scene-stealing Aquaman. I’m sure down the road we’ll see more adventures of the Aquaman character once the reboot starts up, but won’t be following the story that the 2018 movie and this sequel has been creating.
Overall, this ‘Aquaman’ sequel can be fairly entertaining and if you like the first movie, you will probably enjoy this one. Sure, there are some parts of the movie that can be rather silly at times. Yet, they find a way to make it work in this movie. So, make sure to head on down to the Dietrich and catch ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ on the big screen!
The cast: Jason Mamoa as Arthur Curry/Aquaman; Patrick WIlson as Orm; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as David Kane/Black Manta; Temeura Morrison as Tom Curry; Nicoe Kidman as Atlanna; Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin; Jani Zhao as Stingray and Amber Heard as Mera.
‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ is written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick
(Orphan: First Kill; The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It) and directed by James Wan (Malignant; Aquaman; The Conjuring 2).
Mamoa actually helped come up with the sequel’s story when the movie began its development stage in early 2019. ‘Aquaman 2’ marks the 15th and final installment of the DCEU. As stated before, the reboot kicks into gear on the big screen in 2025 with ‘Superman Legacy.’ This sequel had to change release dates a few times due to the impacts of the pandemic on the workload of visual effects vendors.
‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ is rated PG-13 for sci-fi violence and some language and has a running time of 124 minutes.
